FLAME TEST LAB REPORT

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Flame Test lab is to show, atomic emission, wavelength and energy of the light. Also, to show the excited state vs. ground state, and how the flame tests.

MATERIALS

To begin this lab, the lab group filled a beaker with 250 mL of tap water to be the “rinse beaker”. The metal compounds, distilled water and Q-tips are kept by the teacher. Next set up and light the Bunsen burning, wafting when necessary. The group then wet a Q-tip with the distilled water and coated it in one of the metal compounds: Sodium Chloride, Potassium Carbonate, Calcium Chloride, Strontium Chloride, Copper Chloride or Barium Chloride. Then, the instructor should turn off the lights and one of the members of the group were to insert one of the metal compounds that were on the Q-tip into the hottest part of the flame to record the color of the flame, as the group was finished with that the used Q-tip went into the “rinse beaker”. This procedure was repeated with all seven compounds. As the lab was completed, the lab group turned off the Bunsen burner and washed their hands and also washed and put all the materials away.
